My Artist Statement
Art is one
of the main aspects of my life. It is the only activity I have really stuck
with my entire life. I was doodling silly drawings as a child and I didn’t
consider myself an artist or really call myself artistically talented until one
actual good drawing I did when I was young. I saw that I actually had skill at
art and ever since I just built on that skill until I got to where I am today.
I started taking classes and joining clubs to work on my art and see what I was
actually capable of and I fell in love with drawing. I had never intended to
start a life of art it was kind of just one big happy accident that changed my
life for the better.
Drawing is
my main passion. I can do a lot more with a pencil and paper than I could ever
do with a paintbrush. My best work is in my sketchbook where only I can see. I
couldn’t care less if the world can see my creations; as long as I know they’re
there. The art that isn’t hidden away in my sketchbook is either on the
computer or carved into woodblocks. I really enjoy doing digital work because I
have a rivaling passion for computers. This way I can mix both my passions into
one. I really enjoy the clean look that the computer gives the artwork. I like
the look of comic book art and digital inking is the best way to get that kind
of look.
My other
style I use in my art projects is woodblock prints. I like the stylistic look
that woodblock prints give an art piece. The chatter left on a piece gives it a
really nice look. I also use a old school comic book style in my prints. I use
thick clean lines and black areas for shading. I also use the occasional crosshatching
method for some shadows. Woodblock prints are a very difficult medium to work
in and I like being able to say I carved this art out of wood.
In the
future I want to become an illustrator. This way I can still use my hand
drawing skills as well as my digital media skills. I want to go to school and
double major in both Graphic design and illustration to give my self as many
job opportunity that I can get out of school. My dream job however would be to
become a comic illustrator.
